What james loves about this:
It's so much what I believe. On the first part of the quote: I notice that when I try to help others, I grow tremendously. Don't know why, but it seems to work. On the second part: perhaps it's ESPECIALLY the people who drive us crazy who are our best teachers. If someone's completely easy, what do you learn? And it's so critical what she said about "If we learn to open our hearts", because without that, you can't let in the learning.

I am in total agreement with this statement. As a volunteer in a residential treatment facility for abused and neglected children, I am always so blown away by the strength and determination these children have. They have taught and given back to me by their courage and t...

Bless you for the work you do. It is not easy dealing with children who have been through traumatic times. I have learned however that dealing with others openmindedly and with an open heart works miracles.

The hardest part is knowing that these precious souls have been totally betrayed by the people they trusted the most. They have been taken from their homes but because of their severe behavior and emotional problems, they cannot be placed in foster care. I know I should f...

Thank you for this.  I believe that the openness of your mind and your heart and your soul in seeing them, accepting them, appreciating them for who they are - that is part of what allows them to be courageous and open their own hearts.  By learning from them, y...

The reward comes from our yearly reunion of "graduates" from this facility. We have a 96% "success" rate; the majority of these children go on to college or vocational schools, have careers, marry and have families.  They leave us with HOPE and th...

I know that I am annoying to most people. And in a way-I'm glad for it-because I believe that I make at least some people think.

I cannot imagine anyone here could see themselves as annoying. Intellectuals aren't annoying, they're challenging to understand at times but never annoying.

I do believe that annoying people teach us patience and kindness.  I know I have occasionally been one.

Since you have taught me kindness, and have never annoyed me in the least, then we know for a fact that this is an incomplete rule.  Really anyone can be your teacher.  It just helps to reduce the annoyance factor to think of those types as your teachers.

Hello James.  I agree that we can learn from anyone or any situation.  I know that when I am annoyed by someone, it is usually because they are doing something that is a behavior I don't like in myself. (Or something I used to do that I have changed.) &...
