What james loves about this:
It helps me to think of adversity as a necessary, even critical, opportunity to strengthen ourselves and create more good. I don't think it makes the suffering (lack of joy) go away, but it does give it meaning.

It's so great to hear someone else admit to sulking!  I wish I could say I'm sulking less as I get older.  Maybe I need to get older still.  Or maybe just pay more attention to opportunity and gratitude, which has a way of nipping sulking in the bud...

When I am done sulking and look back on myself I usually feel two things.  One, I usually find it humorous. Secondly though, I find it a bit endearing.  The piece of us that sulks actually seems quite innocent and childlike.  I hope none of us ever los...

I have definitely found that as we grow, we sulk less and work through our problems more because we know what's on the other side.

I think you all have summed it up quite nicely,  I think that is the reason my periods of sulking grow shorter as I go along, because experience has taught me that there is something to be mastered in an adverse situation, (usually myself) and I know that there is an...

Sometimes I say that my life would be so completely different if I was raised differently-or by other people-or if I weren't born with disabilities...

If I had been I would not be as strong or as compassionate as I am now-so I forgive them and cherish my struggles.

I've heard & read many people say the same thing - that their challenges have been the source of many character strengths.  For "worriers" like me, it's heartening to know that if what I was worrying about actually came to pass, chances are it w...

Without darkness there can be no light.

Without light how would we know when it is dark?

Nice - this reminds me of "one small candle can dispell the darkness".  And linking back to Helen Keller - this is our job.  To be the candle.  To light the night.  To be brave and patient.  If it was always light, if there was always jo...

That really makes me think that I should be grateful for adversity.  I think about the adversity I have been through in my own life and how those experiences have not only deepened my understanding about myself and the world, they have given me a greater understandi...
