When I grow up I want to be the best person I can be...When I was a little girl I wanted to be a vet and help all the animals. I did get my vet tech license and a year of environmental science. But I like to think that we never stop growing.

I was raised Catholic and the in profession for catholic children was sainthood.  At least it seemed that way since I had all these lives of the saints to read.  I wanted to be a nun for a while.  My aunt asked me what I was going to be when I grew up. ...

I wanted to be a window-washer because, ironically, I thought it was a "safe" job.  I was thinking of how much I enjoyed washing windows for my mom - seeing them get clearer, looking closely to remove every speck.  I'm not sure what this implies ab...

When I was a child I wanted to be many things -- an architect, a dancer, an optometrist, an artist . . . I think what I wanted in all of my childhood musings was to celebrate the beauty and the energy of life.  And now that I am an adult, I try to do that every day.

What do you want to be when you grow up?  It is a question every parent asks his or her child. I remember my daughter Adrienne lying between her father and I one Sunday morning and I remember her reply.  She was four at the time and with great serenity and simpl...

A cedar tree: full of widom from the ages, reaching high for the sun, digging deep into mother earth, resistent to rot and decay, a pillar connecting earth and sky.

I guess what I'm saying is that through my child I realized that wanting to be 'something' was not critical to the life I was living at that moment.  I'm sure like every child I went through phases but they got displaced by the world of now.

That is why I like this question.  If I had clung to my dream of becoming a tree, if I hadn't moved through the phases, it might have become critical for me as I would never become what I dreamed.  But looking back I can see how my idea of a tree moved me as...
