Perhaps it's fear of the unknown. Perhaps it's bound up in our instictual selves that feel the need for control to protect our lives. A deeply rooted fear that if we're not in control of everything then a predator could break through and put us in danger.

It is difficult for us, as humans, to just be. We usually identify with that which we are attached to; our job title, spouse, lover, friend, family, material objects, even a certain feeling gives us something to identify with; so we hang on because hanging on gives us pur...

Because we fear the unknown. In truth, deep down, we do not trust - ourself, God, life... In order to 'go with the flow' - you must trust that you will not sink and drown. And if you do sink, you must trust that the water is not deep. The real truth is, there...

I see you wrote this about a month ago, but I just happened upon it: the Truth, simply stated. I appreciated reading it. Yes. If we do not believe in the benevolent nature of The Universe/God/ourselves, and the Oneness of all, we will always be afraid. (If you haven't al...

Reading these responses has helped me understand why I asked this question. Control is not a bad thing, like simplereligion has said "it is how we control it". I like to make lists and have an agenda, those types of "controling" things are what make me...

Thank you aretamberg for your question. Thought provoking for sure and one most of us humans are challenged with at different times and on many levels. I read with interest James and Lauren's discussion of your question in the Wisdomology newsletter this morning in re...

The premise is that control is a bad thing. It isn't.  'Going with the flow' gives me a vision of mankind giving up the use of their bladders. Just making a piddle whenever it comes. Dogs and cats don't even do that. Some things need to be controlled...

Is it because we are afraid of change? Even if things need to be let go, aren't we comfortable in those habits whether they are good or bad?

I was wondering about this and then something struck me. We have actually been habituated into always being in control. We control everything in our lives. From breakfast to where we going to be buried and everything in between. Even in things we have no control...

I hope this does not sound overly-clever or koan-like, because I mean it from the heart: It is hard to let go of something that you never truly held in the first place.  Try grasping at the breeze and ask yourself: Why can't I hold onto this wind?

It is hard to let goes when one thinks it is hard to let go.  Stop thinking.

It is hard to let go when one tries to let go.  Stop trying.

Don't go with the flow.  Be the flow.

Trying to be the flow is something I have been trying to accomplish. When I believe I have achieved a balance in my life, I am often shown that this is not the case at all.The metaphor that I use for my state is like a river delta, all channels flowing into one. My stream...
